Helping Our Own People, Inc (HOOP), is an all volunteer, non-denominational 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide basis necessities to those living on the streets and those in need in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area ...unconditional giving...no strings attached...no questions asked. The vision of HOOP is to be recognized by the homeless community of Indianapolis as a trusted friend, available to support and/or advise. To provide food, clothing and other necessities in a time of need, while connecting on a personal level as a friend.
We approach the homeless and those in need with respect and dignity. We are continually humbled, knowing that we are so blessed; we could be the one out on the streets. We offer what we have as a sign of hope and to remind those we serve that they are not forgotten; there are many who care enough to donate and collect items for them..
Our History
We saw the homeless on park benches, under bridges, and at the corner table of a fast food restaurant. We felt compassion and wondered what to do. We were concerned that a cash donation may end up doing more harm than good.
Our response was to provide food, clothing, blankets, and hygiene products - enough to get them through another day or the next rough night. More importantly, we provide a hand and conversation. We are a link to the community for our homeless friends.
With this in mind, in the fall of 2004, Deputy Kelley Hayworth of the Marion County Sheriff's department responded and HOOP was formed.
On May 5, 2005, A Board of Directors was established and HOOP became incorporated
July 14, 2005, HOOP is designated as a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization by the IRS.
For 19 years our mission was simple Street Outreach. Since then we have added two additional operations: Emergency Food Bags and Community Give Aways. The Food Bags are provided to IMPD and other services as a stop gap for individuals who are in a crisis. The Community Give Aways are organized by those same Community Services where the needy can come and obtain a few select items for their families; typically socks, shirts and/or hygiene .
